Jaguar Land Rover in negotiations to buy Silverstone

Jaguar Land Rover in negotiations to buy Silverstone

Jaguar Land Rover has reportedly made a bid for the home of British Motorsport, Silverstone, thought to be valued at almost £23 million.

The West Midlands car giant is in negotiations to secure the site with major plans on the horizon, including a five-star hotel, a Jaguar Land Rover heritage centre & motor industry museum.

According to the Coventry Telegraph, a source close to Jaguar Land Rover said: “They have been trying to buy Silverstone for a while now. Talks are still ongoing and the deal isn’t sealed yet.”

“They are interested in it for testing cars and the Motorsport side.”

Recent comments made by Silverstone’s managing director a few months ago suggested that the racing circuit was at risk without major investment on the race track. The news that Jaguar Land Rover are in a position to take over the site has been welcomed by automotive sector experts, claiming JLR could attract enthusiasts from around the world.

A spokesman for Jaguar Land Rover said: “Jaguar Land Rover continually looks to invest and grow its business operations in the UK. We constantly evaluate a wide range of opportunities which are confidential.

Jaguar Land Rover unveils new factory plans

Jaguar Land Rover has unveiled plans to expand its manufacturing capabilities after signing a letter of intent to build a new factory in Slovakia. As part of Jaguar Land Rover’s commitment to deliver more lightweight vehicles, the new plant would aim to produce up to 300,000 vehicles over the next decade; with the first batch of cars to come off the production line in 2018.

The expansion reflects Jaguar Land Rover’s manufacturing ambition to bring production closer to key markets and become more globally competitive.

Robert Fico, prime minister of Slovakia, said: “We are committed to developing Slovakia’s premium automotive industry and, should we be successful, this investment would represent a significant step forward in achieving this. It would provide a boost to our country’s wider industrial strategy as well as benefiting the European Union as a whole.

“We look forward to working closely with Jaguar Land Rover over the coming months to progress the negotiations.”

Recently, Jaguar Land Rover revealed plans to build vehicles in Austria, and they are currently in talks with other European countries and the US to build another manufacturing plant. The locations are largely picked for the growth potential of nearby car markets.

Dr Ralf Speth, Chief Executive at Jaguar Land Rover, has said: “The expansion of our business globally is essential to support its long-term, resilient growth. As well as creating additional capacity, it allows us to invest in the development of more new vehicles and technologies, which supports jobs in the UK.”

Over the past five years, Jaguar Land Rover has employed more than 20,000 people taking its workforce to more than 36,000 and invested more than £11 billion in new technology and development centres. That includes investing more than £500 million in a new Engine Manufacturing Centre in the UK for production of it’s ingenium four cylinder engine.

Despite JLR’s overseas expansion signalling a move away from its UK manufacturing base, Chief executive Dr Ralf Speth confirms: “The UK remains at the centre of our design, engineering and manufacturing capabilities. Partnerships such as this will complement our UK operations and engineering”.

Chevrolet reveals terrifyingly cool self-driving car of the future

The Shanghai Motor Show this year promised to provide an insight into the motoring world of 2030 and thus reveal the ‘cars of the future’. The new concept car revealed by Chevrolet has provided just that. Unlike any self-driving car or concept seen before, the FNR has been put together using futuristic technology, advanced car networking systems and a body which looks like it belongs in a futuristic Sci Fi film.

This self-driving car is effectively a self-contained ‘capsule’ with an impressive ability to charge using a wireless system. The car will run off electricity and the wheels will have magnetic electric motors embedded inside and all this will power an impressive interior plastered with touch and gesture controlled screens and an ‘iris recognition’ start system – basic requirements of any futuristic concept car don’t you think?

There are many benefits the self-driving car can promise – a drop in deadly accidents high among them – but the motorised webbed seats will definitely fill a big desire for fully-autonomous car amongst consumers. The ability to swivel your seat to face the rear of the car and face passengers whilst in self-driving mode, is a concept that many argue should get consumers interested. Who wouldn’t want the possibility to swivel your chair around when taking on a long car journey?

Another benefit of the motorised webbed seats is that they will have the ability to read passenger’s heartChevrelot, FNR, Concept, Car, Swivel, Autonomous, Shanghai, Motor, Show, 2015 rate and bloody pressure. Vehicles today are already being developed with this concept with the hope that if your car detects you are falling asleep or you are experiencing a heart attack, the car will become autonomous and take you to safety. Sounds good doesn’t it? But what will it mean for the fun that most of us experience when driving? Will self-driving cars take this away? Chevrolet think not with the promise that passengers can still drive if they want to. They have also promised that drivers who prefer an edgier performance experience when driving will get this from the FNR, with the ability to tighten suspension and execute tight turns whilst hitting high legal speed.

All this sounds fantastically exciting but this is what concept cars are all about. They aren’t necessarily vehicles you expect to see, but a canvas for things you’d like to see. It certainly does keep things interesting though.

Jaguar begins production of new XE

The much-anticipated production of the new Jaguar XE has officially began at the Wolverhampton & Solihull plants, creating £4 billion of work for companies across the UK.

The full scale operation will include the production of Jaguar’s Ingenium four cylinder engine which will power the first of the new Jaguar XEs as they roll of the production line. Later in the year the new Land Rover Discovery Sport will also go into production at the Wolverhampton plant, also powered by the Ingenium engine. JLR announced last year that it was taking on around 200 more people as it geared up for this engine production and the need for further staff will continue to grow for many years. It is anticipated that 1,500 will work at the Wolverhampton factory.

Across the other side of the Midlands, production of the new Jaguar XE’s aluminium body will take place at JLR’s Solihull plant where another 1,300 automotive engineers are being recruited. The Solihull site normally produces Land Rovers and Range Rovers, but will this year make way for the highly anticipated XE. As well as the investment in the Wolverhampton & Solihull plant, JLR has also recently announced further investment by doubling the size of it’s plant in Whitley and pumping £450 million into it’s Castle Bromwich’s site. All this further strengthens JLR position in the West Midlands and the rest of the UK.

JLR purchasing director Ian Harnett said “Jaguar Land Rover is one of the UK’s success stories, not simply because it has seen an upsurge in demand thanks to sustained investment, but because it has been able to support a burgeoning, high-tech highly skilled supply base here in the UK.

“With each successive new or upgraded model, we are seeing the positive impact felt amongst the entire automotive sector which is great news for everyone committed to ensuring the UK remains truly competitive on a global stage.”

London Taxi Company to create 1,000 new jobs in Coventry

The firm behind the new London taxi announces plans to invest £250m in its next generation green-cab

  • Coventry to receive new state of the art facility for the next generation London Black Taxi
  • Up to 1,000 jobs will be created
  • Significant increase in production planned from 2018

The UK’s car-making industry received an even bigger boost this week as the man behind the London Taxi Company, Geely, is pumping £250 million into a research, development and assembly plant in Coventry. This in turn will create further jobs and secure long-term economic benefits for the Midlands.

This announcement comes at a time when the company prepares to create it’s next-generation electric and ultra-low emission taxi in light of the new regulations being introduced which will reduce the level of emissions from new taxis.

The Mayor of London, behind the new regulation, said: “The production of zero emission capable vehicles, incorporating the latest state of the art technology, is essential as we strive to create the greenest taxi fleet in the world for London. I warmly welcome Geely’s commitment to building this impressive new factory in Coventry, highlighting the UK’s position as a world leader in the development and manufacturing of ultra low emission technologies.” (The London Taxi Company)

The new plant will have the capacity to assemble up to 36,000 vehicles a year and will significantly increase the UK’s economic growth and the automotive industry as a whole.

New Jaguar XF revealed 2015

Exclusive pics, a dramatic appearance on wires and more details on the spec: The new Jaguar XF is being revealed, and it shouldn’t disappoint.

Promising less weight and improved agility, Jaguar’s latest luxurious saloon has got everyone excited. What has been a relatively silent lead up to the new XF, the mystery surrounding this car is being slowly revealed by Jaguar in exclusive teaser pics and they only prove that Jaguar are still pushing the limits of it’s competition. Due on sale in 2015, Jaguar’s new XF is attracting even the most loyal Porsche and BMW lovers, and with most of the spec now revealed, you can understand why.

New Jaguar XF: style & technology combined

The original XF appeared in 2007 and Jaguar has done much to keep up with the latest technological and advanced engineering demands. The Jaguar XF appears to look somewhat the same but the foundation of the car is much different.  Weighing significantly less, the new XF is constructed from more than 75% aluminium which has meant the car will be significantly stiffer and subsequently more agile.  The new XF is also expected to be bigger than the model it replaces, creating more of a contrast between itself and the XE (due to be released also this year).

Following Jaguar’s £500m investment in it’s new Wolverhampton engine plant, it is not surprising that the new Jaguar XF will be equipped with the new Ingenium engine it has developed as a result. Full details of what the 2.0-litre-petrol four cylinder is capable of is yet to be revealed, however it is certain to be one of the cleanest cars on the road.

Inside the new Jaguar XF

The interior of the XF proves why Jag is one of the most luxurious brands out there. The plush leather seats, wood trim & silver metal finish all add a touch of class to the XF which makes it feel every inch a luxury executive saloon. Jaguar’s new InControl infotainment and connectivity system is fully integrated into this car and has replaced what was an ageing interface in the previous XF range. What is most advantageous in the Jag’s infotainment system is the ability to be integrate with both Apple and Android smartphones making this car fully operational to most consumers. Other exciting features include an app which allows you to pre-heat or cool the interior before you have even entered the vehicle, unlock the doors and locate the car in a crowded car park.
